Ave Maria, shot in Israel by British-Palestinian director Basil Khalil, tells the story of five Palestinian nuns who are forced to break their silent daily rituals when an Israeli family’s car breaks down outside their convent.

Through this film, “I wanted to explore what would happen if two different ends of the spectrum of extreme rules were stuck with each other,” Khalil says. “One of the main problems in conflict is that people don’t question the rules that are placed on them, and sometimes, it can be absurd when you look at it from the outside.”
